A Love Letter to Los Angeles
Dear Los Angeles,
I can’t believe it’s been 10 years, you crazy bitch. On the one hand, wasn’t it just six months ago that I was driving across the country in a packed Toyota Corolla? On the other hand, haven’t I been here forever? Time flies when there aren’t any seasons, I guess.
Oh, LA. There were times I thought we weren’t going to make it. Times when I fell down so hard I was sure that I wouldn’t be able to get back up. And yet. And yet. I kept fighting. I kept dragging myself back to my feet. And even though you were part of the reason for my fall, you were also my reason to get back up. You sent me help, in the form of amazing friends:
And opportunities where I didn’t think there were any:
You were NOT what I expected. I assumed that there was a shiny veneer and something sinister lurking underneath. And I wasn’t wrong. There’s a lot of f*ckery in this city, no doubt. You really do like to chew up people and spit them out. You have earned your reputation.
Not unlike her
However, beyond the foolery there is another layer. A layer of good. Good people. Good food. Fun activities. Open mindedness. Creativity. Strength. I mean, really, you don’t make much sense as a city. You’re completely spread out into little micro-cities. You shake, you burn, you flood. But you’re still here.
Just like me.
Living with you has helped me find a strength inside myself that I didn’t know existed. I had no idea I could be the person that I’ve become. But I’m really glad that I did. So, thank you, for helping me to become the woman I am today. I’m glad for all of it.
To commemorate our anniversary, I decided to mark the occasion:
Yup, that’s my blackbird tattoo (which I got to commemorate getting up after one of the many times you knocked me on my ass and I got back up, stronger). But now the bird is holding a scroll that says: 912.794. That isn’t just a collection of random numbers. It’s the Dewey Decimal call number for the Thomas Guide.
See, when I moved to Los Angeles GPS wasn’t standard on every phone. You had to pay for apps or buy a special device. Waze was years away. So everyone had a Thomas Guide. The street guide to Los Angeles. It came in really handy when I was working as a PA. In fact, even though I can use GPS for everything now, I still have my copy.
It’s quintessential LA. And, like Los Angeles itself, it is now a part of me forever.
Happy anniversary, you insane city. I love you.
